Damodar Kunda Jeep tour : A Sacred Lake in the Heart of the Himalayas

High in the remote upper Mustang region, at an altitude of 4,890 meters, lies Damodar Kunda one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites for both Hindus and Buddhists. This shimmering lake rests at the base of the Damodar Himal, surrounded by rugged landscapes and snow-capped peaks. Because of its location in a restricted area, travelers need a special trekking permit making the journey here a rare and meaningful adventure.

From April to September, devotees from near and far arrive to pay homage to Lord Damodar. The most special time is during the August full moon, when hundreds of pilgrims gather to take a holy dip in the icy waters. It is believed that bathing here cleanses one’s soul and washes away all sins, granting spiritual renewal.

Damodar Kunda sits between Kagbeni and Muktinath, two other sacred Himalayan destinations. The views are simply breathtaking, the towering Annapurna range, the graceful Muktinath Himal (6,706m), and the majestic Bhrikuti Peak (6,364m) rise all around you. Many also believe this lake is the very source of the Kali Gandaki River, home to the revered Shaligram stones.
