Trip Introduction

Lumbini Tour

Lumbini is the birthplace of Lord Buddha, the founder of Buddhism and an advocate of peace. Our Lumbini Tour takes you to this sacred site, located in Nepal’s Terai plains in the southwest area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the world’s most important pilgrimage centers. Every year, hundreds of thousands of visitors and pilgrims visit this hallowed location to pay their respects to the Lord Buddha.

The exact birthplace is indicated by an Ashokan Pillar built by Emperor Ashoka in 249 BC. A marker stone discovered at the Mayadevi Temple, adjacent to this pillar, is believed to be the exact location where Siddhartha Gautama Buddha was born. Another sacred spot in the Garden is the Puskarni Pond, where Queen Mayadevi is said to have bathed prior to giving birth to Buddha.

Beyond the Sacred Garden, Lumbini’s Monastic Zone is one of the most intriguing aspects of the visit. It is divided into two zones: Eastern (Theravada tradition) and Western (Mahayana and Vajrayana tradition), and it brings together monasteries created by Buddhist groups from all over the world, each representing the architectural style of its original country. Highlights include:

The Royal Thai Monastery (Wat Thai Lumbini) was built by the Royal Thai government and is on a huge, neatly maintained courtyard in the Eastern Zone. Its brilliant white marble base, capped with golden spires, adheres to traditional Thai temple design, and the surrounding gardens and reflecting ponds make it one of Lumbini’s most photographed monasteries.

Cambodian Monastery (Cambodia monastery) Designed after the famous silhouette of Angkor Wat, this monastery brings Khmer architecture to the Nepali plains. The intricately carved stone façade and tiered towers echo Cambodia’s most famous landmark, creating a stunning contrast with the surrounding nature.

China Buddhist Monastery This temple, one of Lumbini’s largest monastery complexes, was erected in the imperial Chinese architectural style, with sweeping tiled roofs, red-lacquered pillars, and a central courtyard laid out in traditional Chinese temple manner. Its size indicates the considerable Chinese Buddhist presence in the Monastic Zone.

The Myanmar Golden Temple (Lumbini Golden Temple) was one of the first foreign monasteries built in Lumbini, and it was modelled after Yangon’s famous Shwedagon Pagoda. Its golden stupa and bell-shaped structure make it a visually appealing landmark, especially at sunrise and sunset when the gold catches the light.

Korean Buddhist Temple (Dae Sung Sakya Temple) Built by the Korean Buddhist community, this temple has traditional Korean architectural features such as wooden beams, tiled roofs, and understated, elegant proportions that stand out from the more elaborate Southeast Asian temples around.

Vietnam Phat Quoc Tu Temple, a relatively modern addition to the zone, combines traditional pagoda-style roofs with elaborate dragon designs and tranquil, meditative garden settings that reflect Vietnamese Mahayana Buddhist heritage.

The Great Lotus Stupa (Germany) is one of Lumbini’s most architecturally spectacular modern constructions, created in the shape of a large blooming lotus flower. It was funded and designed with support from the German Tara Foundation. Its strong, contemporary design distinguishes it from the more conventional monasteries in the Western Zone.

Other International Monasteries the Monastic Zone also contains temples and viharas established by Buddhist communities from France, Sri Lanka, Japan, Austria, and a number of other nations, each with its distinct architectural history. Together, these monasteries transform Lumbini into a living, walkable museum of world Buddhist architecture, with each serving as a little embassy for its country’s religion and artistry.

Lumbini Tour | Buddha’s Birthplace Day Trip from Kathmandu – itinerary

Take an early morning flight from Kathmandu to Bhairahawa (Gautam Buddha International Airport), a short and scenic hop that avoids the long overland journey through the Terai plains. On arrival, you’ll be met by our representative and driven to Lumbini, where you’ll check in at your hotel.

In the afternoon, begin your pilgrimage at the Lumbini Development Zone, the spiritual and archaeological core of Lumbini. Visit the Maya Devi Temple, the sacred site marking the exact spot where Queen Mayadevi gave birth to Prince Siddhartha Gautama; the nearby Ashoka Pillar, erected by Emperor Ashoka in 249 BC to commemorate his own pilgrimage to the site; the tranquil Sacred Garden surrounding the temple; and the Puskarini (Sacred Pond), where Mayadevi is believed to have bathed before giving birth. Continue into the Lumbini Monastic Zone, where the day’s exploration introduces you to the diversity of Buddhist architecture from around the world.

In the evening, settle into your first meditation and prayer session, held in a peaceful setting within the pilgrimage zone — a gentle introduction to the reflective rhythm of the days ahead.

Overnight in Lumbini.

Begin the day early with morning meditation and Buddhist prayers, ideally practiced near the Sacred Garden as the site wakes up in quiet stillness — one of the most atmospheric times to be in Lumbini.

After breakfast, spend the day visiting the international Buddhist monasteries of the Monastic Zone, including:

  • The Royal Thai Monastery, with its gleaming white-and-gold architecture
  • The Myanmar Golden Temple, modeled on Yangon’s Shwedagon Pagoda
  • The China Buddhist Monastery, one of the largest complexes in Lumbini, built in traditional imperial Chinese style
  • The Korean Buddhist Temple, with its understated wooden architecture and tiled roofs
  • The Japan Peace Stupa, a serene white pagoda that also overlooks the surrounding wetlands
  • Other monasteries and viharas within the Monastic Zone, representing Buddhist communities from across the world

Each monastery reflects the architectural traditions of its home country, making the walk through the zone feel like a journey through the wider Buddhist world, all within a single sacred park.

In the evening, take a peaceful walk around the Sacred Garden, followed by time set aside for meditation, personal reflection, and prayer as the day winds down.

Overnight in Lumbini.

After breakfast, drive to Tilaurakot, widely identified as the site of ancient Kapilavastu, the kingdom where Prince Siddhartha Gautama spent his early life before renouncing royal life in search of enlightenment. Explore the Tilaurakot Archaeological Site, with its excavated palace walls, gateways, and moats that once formed the royal city.

Continue to the wider ancient Kapilavastu area and Kudan, believed to be the site where Buddha first met his father, King Suddhodana, after attaining enlightenment. Depending on available time, visit other nearby Buddhist heritage sites scattered across the Kapilavastu district, each connected to episodes from the Buddha’s early life.

Return to Lumbini in the afternoon. The evening is left open for meditation, prayer, and personal time, allowing you to reflect on the historical sites visited earlier in the day.

Overnight in Lumbini.

After breakfast, make a final visit to Maya Devi Temple for closing prayers and quiet reflection — a fitting way to conclude the pilgrimage at the place where it truly began.

Transfer to Bhairahawa Airport for your flight back to Kathmandu. On arrival, your 4 Days / 3 Nights Sacred Lumbini Buddhist Pilgrimage Tour comes to an end, with airport drop-off or hotel transfer as needed.
