Welcome to Visit Asian Diamond, your doorway to Upper Mustang, Nepal’s most remarkable trekking region, also known as “Little Tibet.” Join us to experience the true spirit of adventure as we travel over desert hills, alpine meadows, dramatic deep canyons, soaring naked rocks, and harsh rocky mountains that
define this timeless landscape.
Upper Mustang trek and Jeep tour is one of Nepal’s most interesting and popular trek and Jeep tour destinations. To safeguard its ancient culture and undisturbed natural biodiversity, the Nepalese government has designated it as a restricted area, encouraging responsible and sustainable tourism practices. As a result, only a restricted number of trekkers are authorized to access, and visitors must get a Special Trekking Permit before exploring this magnificent landscape.
Lo Manthang, the old walled capital, is located in the center of the ancient Mustang Kingdom. Formerly known as Menthang, the name symbolizes the region’s strong ties to traditional medicine. “Men” means medicine, and “Thang” means ground, alluding to the location where rich medicinal herbs were discovered. Over time, Menthang became Lo Manthang, with “Lo” meaning south and representing the hallowed medicinal plains that gave birth to this famous Himalayan monarchy.
Upper Mustang is situated in the rain shadow of the renowned Dhaulagiri and Annapurna peaks, making it an ideal location for stunning Himalayan views. Trekkers may see some of the world’s highest peaks from here, including Dhaulagiri I (8,167 m), the seventh-highest summit, and Annapurna I (8,091 m), the tenth-highest peak. Upper Mustang, situated behind the main Himalayan range, is one of the top trek destinations during the monsoon and Jeep tour in Autumn and Spring season , offering clear skies and calm weather. This distinct environment allows trekkers to experience stunning scenery while experiencing varied high-altitude flora and wildlife along the way.
Upper Mustang is a remarkable gem of ancient Buddhist culture and traditional Himalayan lifestyle. The former Kingdom of Lo, now known as Lo Manthang, is a spectacular walled city famed for its 16th-century monasteries, ancient fort ruins, mani walls, sacred caves, and centuries-old murals. Lo Manthang is also home to the King of Mustang, who ruled this historic kingdom until the early twenty-first century. Upper Mustang trek and Jeep Tour is full of excitement, with trails leading across barren hills, serene alpine meadows, dramatic deep canyons, towering naked cliffs, and steep rocky moraines.
The Tiji Festival is one of the most important and vivid events held by the inhabitants of Lo Manthang, Upper Mustang. The event, held in May, lasts three days and features important ceremonies, colorful mask dances, and traditional rites conducted by local monks.
“Tiji” is a simplified version of Tempa Chirim or Tenchi, which means “Prayer for World Peace” or “Spreading Buddha’s teachings to the world.” During the Tiji Festival (May 14-16, 2026), Buddhist monks gather to pray for harmony, peace, and the well-being of all living things. The event commemorates Dorjee Sonnu, an incarnation of Lord Buddha, defeating the demon Man Tam Ru, an evil force believed to cause damage through storms, droughts, and sorrow to humanity.
The ceremony is hosted in the Choedhe Monastery in Lo Manthang. The sacred monk dances are an important part of the celebration: Tsa Chham on the first day, Nga Chham on the second day, and a spectacular ritual on the third day, signifying the demon’s return to Lord Buddha’s domain.
The monastery, led by a Sakya Rinpoche, houses approximately 65 monks, all of whom actively participate in the event while dressed in bright and symbolic ceremonial robes. These rites reflect Tibetan Buddhism’s profound historical origins and rich cultural history, both of which have been preserved in Upper Mustang over generations. This year’s festival will take held in Upper Mustang on May 14, 15, and 16, 2026. Along with this magnificent event, guests can hike to the old walled city of Lo Manthang, which adds cultural dimension to the excursion.
Michel Peissel, one of the first foreigners to trek into Upper Mustang in 1964, described the festival in awe, saying: “The events that I observed were so extraordinary and so shocking that I dared not believe my eyes, and even today I have some trouble believing in the reality of what I saw that day.”

Restricted Area Trekking Regions in Nepal:
Every trekker in Nepal must obtain a special permit for the Upper Mustang Trek Tour
Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP):
Since the Upper Mustang passes through the Annapurna Conservation Area, an ACAP permit is required.
All necessary trekking permits will be handled and arranged by your trekking service provider, ensuring a hassle-free experience.
Teahouses along the trail provide basic yet comfortable rooms, usually with twin beds, blankets, and a shared bathroom. Hot showers and charging facilities are available at most lodges for a small extra fee.
During the Upper Mustang Trek Tour, trekkers can enjoy a surprising variety of local and international dishes served in cozy teahouses and lodges along the trail. Meals are freshly prepared, nutritious, and designed to provide the energy needed for long trekking days in the Himalayas.
Typical Meals:
Dal Bhat: The classic Nepali meal of steamed rice, lentil soup, and vegetable curry — healthy, filling, and unlimited in most teahouses.
Momo: Delicious Nepali dumplings stuffed with vegetables or meat, often served with a spicy dipping sauce.
Noodles and Pasta: Stir-fried or soupy noodles, and pasta with vegetables, egg, or meat.
Fried Rice: A popular dish made with rice, seasonal vegetables, eggs, or meat.
Pancakes & Porridge: Sweet or savory options, perfect for breakfast, made with wheat or buckwheat flour.
Western Dishes: Items like pizza, omelets, and toast are available in most teahouses, often with a local touch such as yak cheese or homemade jam.
Snacks & Beverages:
You’ll find tea, coffee, hot chocolate, soft drinks, beer, and occasionally local wines. It’s a good idea to bring energy bars, nuts, or chocolate for quick snacks on the trail.
Water:
Boiled or bottled water is available at teahouses, but it’s strongly recommended to carry water purification tablets or a portable filter to ensure safe drinking water throughout the trek.
Note: We humbly request that you don’t drink/eat milk and meat items (hot chocolate, milk coffee, and milk tea) because milk is powder and not boiled.
Like the majority of the treks, the Upper Mustang Trek Tour offers you accommodation in tea houses with basic facilities. Every Tea house has a menu, and you can make your own choice. But most of the foods are dominated by the Nepali Dal-Bhat and similar meals. Our guide will suggest you select fresh, hygienic, and trek-suitable food.
