Trip Introduction

Jomolhari Trekking

Jomolhari Trekking has been named after the Jomolhari peak that stands prominently in the eastern Himalayan landscape of Bhutan. The peak has been considered to be sacred, and locals believe that the peak is home to the Himalayan goddess. The trek is filled with spectacular views of the Himalayan mountains, including the sacred Jumolhari and Jichu Drake peaks in Bhutan. You will reach the farthest point in the northeast, Gunitsawa, the border between Bhutan and Tibet.

The trail passes through fields of rice, millet, apple orchards, and forests of pine and spruce. The scenery, especially along the Pa Chhu or Paro River, is majestic. The camping will be at an average height of 3000m, above the tree line. The highest camp will be set up at Jangothang (4,040m), which is a vantage point for watching the marvellous Mt. Jumolhari, Mt. Tshering Gang and Mt. Jichu Drake. On our way to Shodu, we will walk along a high ridge above the camp down Mo Chhu valley, involving a steep climb over the Yeli La pass (4,820m), the highest pass of our journey.

During and after the trek, we will also have time to visit culturally important sites in Thimpu, Paro and Punakha. The 17th-century Ta Dzong houses ancient thangka, arms and postage stamps. We will also go to Drukgyal Dzong, Ringpung Dzong and Taktsang Dzong, the latter being the places where Guru Rinpoche is said to have meditated.
